Writing a Thank You Letter

posted in Career Advice |

I can’t tell my clients enough the importance of sending a Thank You letter after an interview. In a recent survey of hiring managers, nearly 15% say they would not hire someone who failed to send a Thank You letter after the interview. And 32 % say they would still consider the candidate, but would think less of him or her.

Writing a Thank You letter is not only polite and professional, it gives you another opportunity to sell yourself and beat your competition. The letter should be short, grammatically perfect and to the point. Thank them for the opportunity and restate why you would be the perfect candidate for the job.

I’m often asked what do you do when more than 1 person interviewed you? Send a letter to each person and make sure each person’s letter is unique. Make believe they are all comparing your letters and you don’t your note to seem like a form letter. For best results, email your letter as soon as you can and follow up with a mailed letter. Hand-written is best, for that personal touch. These small tips can make all the difference in getting that job.
