The number one reason a person likes or dislikes their job is their boss. You can work for a company listed as one of the best places to work, and if your boss is a jerk, you’ll be miserable. Conversely, if you have a supportive boss in a lousy company, you’ll be buffered from the issues that arise there.
So what do you do if you are suffering under a micromanaging, egocentric, abusive, lying and untrustworthy creep? There are only a couple things you can do.

One of my better managers once said to me, “Don, there are only 3 kinds of people in this world, the good, the bad and the mediocre.” “The bad people are easy,“ he said, “if you have them you get rid of them and if you see them in an interview, just keep looking. The good people are easy too since you support them on the job and hire them just as quickly as you can.”
“It’s the mediocre people who kill us”, he concluded “because most of the people we meet on the job are, unfortunately, mediocre. So never settle on the mediocre hire just because you want a position filled…always wait for the really good person to come along.”

The most important question to ask in an interview is “What are the challenges I would face in this job in the first 6 months?” Pay close attention to the interviewer’s answer as it will tell you exactly what they are looking for. Then focus your responses on the skills and achievements you have produced that would give them the confidence that you will succeed on the job.
